Whether the idea of spending a few hours strolling through the never-ending maze of furniture and decor pieces seems overwhelming or exciting to you, there are a few key components to a successful trip to the Swedish Mecca of affordable furniture, storage solutions and meatballs. First, have a plan! It might sound obvious, but it will save you an outstanding amount of time and money if you have a list (or at least a general idea) of what needs to be purchased. Bonus points if you checked that all of those items are available in stock at the store you're going to! Second, small items add up at the checkout, so beware of the tricky $-.99 price tags and mindlessly adding unnecessary items to your cart. And last but not least, enjoy the process! Ikea has a somewhat underrated reputation, especially in the design community, however, I'm a strong believer that you can find incredible pieces that won't break the bank and will bring a breath of fresh air to your home. The store has changed quite a bit in the last few years, you can expect much more than just tacky lanterns and basic tables, which scream IKEA from a mile away.
Here is a list of my personal favourites from the New IKEA collection 2022:
1. FEJKA ($49.99) Artificial potted plant, indoor/outdoor Olive tree 7 ½ "
In case you've been living under a rock, those Olive trees have been one of the hottest decor pieces in the last couple of years. They are used to balance out the scale and are perfect for introducing some height and texture into the design. You can place it into a beautiful pot or a basket for a softer, farmhouse feel.
2. OMBONAD ($39.99) Tray, walnut 17"
Who wouldn't love a fresh and delicious breakfast in bed served on this beautiful wooden tray?! A deep and rich tone of walnut will be a perfect addition to you modern or traditional home.
3. TEBSTRUP ($39.99) Rug, low pile, multicolour 2'7" x 6'7"
This rug comes in two different sizes and I am completely and hopelessly in love with the colour combination! It will add some texture and finish up the space while not calling for too much attention. The colours are giving you the flexibility to add it to any floor type and finish, as it brings together both warm and cool tones.
4. MORABO ($499) Armchair, Djuparp dark blue/wood
Ikea is not usually my go-to for larger furniture pieces, especially the ones that will bring a lot of attention, however, this chair ticked all the right boxes! A rich and very deep indigo blue, a luxurious velvet texture and just enough detail to make it special! I might consider swapping the legs to something a tiny bit more elegant, but overall a great find! Ikea also offers couches and ottomans from the same collection.
5. FÄRGKLAR ($49.99) 24-piece dinnerware set, matte green
It is completely impossible to me to go to Ikea and not get anything from the kitchen section! I am still using some of the plates that I purchased for my first apartment when I moved to college. Today the selection is much more pleasant than it was a decade ago (oh my!) with neutral tones and minimalistic designs. You can also mix a match the pieces for an extra layer of colour.
6. ASPSVÄRMARE ($17.99) Throw, black/white 51" x 67 "
Some Ikea throws tend to be on a thinner side, but not this number! It has a wonderful texture and fringe at the bottom and just the right size and coziness for watching movies with snacks during cold winter nights. And it can easily be transformed into a picnic blanket in the summer, win-win!
7. EKET ($20) Cabinet, light green 13 3/4" x 13 3/4" x 13 3/4 "
Yes, it is one of the most popular items in Ikea history, but this time they have added colour, which I'm so here for! These cubes are modular, so you can create any type of storage system you want and mix up closed cabinets with open shelves, which is definitely a trend!
8. ARTISTISK ($34.99) Chopping board, oak 23 ¼" x 9 ¾ "
This chopping board is a must in any kitchen, it adds warmth to the space when not in use and proudly displayed on the countertop, but it can also be doubled as a serving board, how can you pass on that?
9. HEMMAFIXARE ($14.99) Storage case, fabric stripe/white/gray 17 ¼" x 20" x 7 ½ "
Storage (or better lack thereof) is one of the top requests that interior designers get on a regular basis. Here's one of the most simple and elegant solutions. These cases are spacious and will fill a lot, but also easily accessible! You can store them in the attic, top shelves of your closet or even under the bed.
10. INSVEP ($34.99) Basket, water hyacinth 20" x 14 ¼" x 17 "
Baskets are on of my favourite products Ikea makes so well! of all I love the shape of this open woven basket, it can be placed in so many tight spaces, between the furniture or next to the wall and serve its purpose (holding the blankets, toys, cords or anything else that you'd rather hide away).
